Crane Operator

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Certified Crane Operator is responsible for operating cranes on heavy civil projects including road construction, site development, underground utilities, and infrastructure work. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical ability, situational awareness, and a commitment to safety while working in dynamic, fast-paced environments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate cranes (hydraulic, crawler, or rough terrain) to lift, move, and position materials such as precast concrete, trench boxes, Sheetpile and H-Pile, handling of pile driving equipment, clamshell and dredging occasionally.

  • Safely execute lifts in support of civil construction activities including earthwork setting large diameter structures, underground utilities, roadwork bridge construction, earth retention systems, and structural installations.

  • Conduct daily inspections of crane equipment, rigging, and lifting devices; document and report any deficiencies.

  • Interpret load charts, lift plans, blueprints, and site layouts to ensure safe lift execution.

  • Coordinate closely with riggers, signal persons, foremen, and project supervisors to ensure efficient and safe operations.

  • Set up crane equipment properly, including outriggers, cribbing/mats, and counterweights based on site conditions.

  • Evaluate job site conditions including soil stability, weather, proximity to utilities, and work zone hazards.

  • Participate in pre-task planning and safety meetings, including critical lift planning when required.

  • Adhere to all OSHA, MIOSHA, DOT (when applicable), and Taplin safety policies and procedures.

  • Maintain daily logs, inspection records, and operational documentation.

  • Assist with preventative maintenance and coordinate repairs as needed.

  • QUALIFICATIONS

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.

    • Valid NCCCO certification (or equivalent) for crane operation.

    • Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.

    • State of Michigan licensing (if applicable).

    • Minimum of 5 years of crane operation experience in civil or heavy construction.

    • Demonstrated experience supporting infrastructure projects such as utilities, roadwork, or site development.

    • Strong knowledge of rigging, lift planning, and load calculations.

  • ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED

    • OSHA 10 or 30-Hour Construction Certification.

    • Experience working around underground utilities and excavation operations.

    • Familiarity with DOT-regulated work zones and traffic control environments.
